Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has declared that "no amount of intimidation, harassment and killing of its members by the police will deter it from the actualization of Biafran Republic even as Anambra State Police Command said "it has deployed 120 Mobile Police Force against them. In a statement, Acting Director of Information MASSOB, Mr. Uchenna Madu, described as "unnecessary ranting" threat by the police to deal with MASSOB members, and restated MASSOB's resolve to go ahead with its 26 August 2004 Voluntary Stay-at-home exercise. "We are not deterred or entertaining any fear or cold mind because of Nigerian police who are ranting with their 120 mobile men against MASSOB.

THE Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has condemned Federal Government clampdown on members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), particularly the recent arrest of 14 alleged members of the group by the police in Enugu State, and the refusal of the police to release them on bail for failing to pay a bribe of N70,000. CLO's Southeast Zone Director, Mr Okechukwu Nwanguma in a statement also condemned statement credited to the Police Force Public Relations Officer, Chris Olakpe to the effect that police has swung into action to dislodge the group (MASSOB), in line with the Inspector- General's directives.

analysis THE Nigeria-Biafra War ended in 1970 on a note of "no victor, no vanquished" that was supposed to pave the way for the reintegration of the Igbos into a post-civil war Nigeria. But the ghost of Biafra, the secessionist name of the Igbo country during the war, has continued to haunt Nigeria since then. Apart from sustained strident cries of marginalisation by majority of Igbo over the years, the emergence of a pro-Biafra pressure group, Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra(MASSOB), has added to the growing impression that the war may not be over after all.

Awka - POLICE in Anambra State said they are battle-ready for members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) who are set to observe August 26 this year, as Biafra Day. They said they are set to unleash 120 newly-recruited mobile police women on MASSOB should the latter use women and children as human shield to cause public disturbance.

opinion Lagos - What do we call this - Nigeria's own brand of politics or crass display of irresponsibility? There is nothing wrong in playing politics but it is a disdain to humanity when persons placed in positions of trust and authority gamble with the lives of the people under them, when they are supposed to protect and provide for them.

Enugu - Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has condemned the police for its renewed repression of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), saying the police was engaging in misplaced aggression against a peaceful and non-violent organisation.

Benin City - MEN of the Edo State police command have cracked down on suspected members of the Movement for the Actualization of a Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in Benin City. Two alleged members of the group, identified as Chinonso and Tony Uzoroma were confirmed to have been arrested by the police but the group's Chief Provisional Administrator for Edo region, Mr. Rufus Alozie said yesterday that about 20 of his men were missing after Sunday's raid on them by the police.
