GOVERNORS of the South Eastern states of the country declared yesterday at the opening of Igbo Leadership Retreat in Asaba that although the Igbos "still remain the most marginalised in the federation" they would not contemplate secession as it would jeopardise the huge investments of Ndigbo people scattered across the country.

column Lagos - IN spite of the controversial judgement of Justice Roseline Ukeje, Chief Judge of Federal High Court, Abuja, which invalidated the position of the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress and prohibited labour strikes, a coalition of labour and civil society embarked on a four-day strike with effect from October 11, 2004. The action virtually paralysed the nation despite concerted efforts by establishment personnel and the Nigeria Police to sabotage the mass revolt. It became crystal clear to all and sundry that the current civilian democratic government is very unpopular and certainly detested by the people of this country.

opinion OBJ's peace diplomacy remains the best option. GOING by the events taking place in the Niger Delta in recent times, one can say that the area remains the powder keg of the country. In truth, not even the inarticulate spirit of Biafra as expressed by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), the passing reference to Oduduwa by the Oodua People's Congress (OPC), the occasional chanting of refrain of fearful songs by Arewa Congress and other ethnic militia pose a major problem to the country as the Niger Delta Volunteer Force and other forces in the area.

Lagos - FIFTY-three suspected members of the Movement for the Survival of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), including a pregnant woman and an aged man who have been in prison custody have asked a Federal High Court, Lagos to admit them to bail.

Abakaliki - AN Abakaliki Magistrate's court has granted bail to 30 members of the Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) who were arraigned before it on Thursday. The MASSOB members were charged with, among other things, conspiracy to commit felony, attempt to commit treason, as well as attempt to cause breach of the peace by shouting slogans that they are Biafran and not Nigeria.
