Owerri & Aba - TWENTY-THREE members of the Movement for the Actualization of the
Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), yesterday breathed the air of freedom
when an Owerri Chief Magistrate's Court granted them bail on charges
levelled against them and three others.

On 20 January 2005, four State Security Services (SSS) agents raided
newsstands in southeastern Enugu state. The security agents arrested the
state chairman of the Newspapers Vendors' Association of Nigeria, Clement
Egbuche, and two newspaper vendors, identified as Emeji and Chidinma. The
three were arrested for selling copies of the tabloid newspaper "Eastern
Pilot", which carried reports of the "emergence of a new Biafra
nation".

last week in different parts of Imo State are to be arraigned before an
Owerri Magistrate's Court today.

THE retirement, Monday, of Mr. Tafa Adebayo Balogun as the
Inspector-General of Police, IGP, the country's foremost cop, and the
elevation of Mr. Sunday Ehindero on an acting capacity, was a shocker of
some sort. Unlike his predecessor, Alhaji Musiliu Smith, there were not
enough indications and widespread insinuations, real or otherwise, of
insensitivity or incompetence.
OPERATIVES of the State Security Services (SSS), yesterday, raided news
stands in Enugu and arrested three vendors including the state chairman of
the Vendors Association, Mr Clement Egbuche apparently in connection with
the sale of a news tabloid Eastern Pilot carrying stories on the emergence
of a new Biafra.

SCORES of anti-riot mobile policemen yesterday morning took over the
streets of Owerri, the Imo State capital, to forestall an alleged planned
declaration of a Republic of Biafra, scheduled for yesterday, by the
Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra
(MASSOB).
