column WE cannot afford to waste one more month". That was then. With tact and quiet diplomacy, the Secretary General has now realised that his glasses were too dusty to see that it was 48 months life and not 24 months. There is peace with the executive now. I do not know much about Col. Achuzie but he has a name I grew up to respect. He was a great soldier and a true believer in the Igbo cause. Coming from an area where not many want to be regarded as Igbo, he is a great man indeed.02/24/2006
Awka - Initially, it came as a rumour from commuters who had returned from Onitsha at about 11am that Tuesday morning that Hausas and Igbos were fighting in the commercial city. Nobody took what many then had termed "alarmists" serious because there was no prior reason to suspect that people of Nigeria's Northern origin who have domiciled in the state for years, inter-marrying with their Igbo hosts and doing businesses together would be engaging in internecine battle over issues that border on religion.02/20/2006
opinion Lagos - CONTEMPORARY senior citizens, are those who are 65 years old and over. They were born around 1939 or shortly thereafter when the Second World War was threatening. Adolf Hitler was then on the verge of plunging the world into another holocaust of blood and fire. These senior citizens had turned adults by October 1960 when Nigeria gained its independence from British imperialism. The general notion then was that black rule was much better than white rule whatever the circumstances. How wrong their perception! What indeed we are witnessing today points to the fact that indigenous regimes can be grossly incompetent and callous even in the face of purported democracy.02/20/2006
opinion Etche - Brigadier General Mobolaji Johnson is one Nigerian whose viewpoint on any national issue should not be easily set aside or lampooned as has become the practice with President Olusegun Obasanjo's spokesmen. He did not only have a brilliant military career, his profile as the first ever Governor of Lagos state speaks volumes about his virtues in public life. When the government of Gen. Yakubu Gowon was overthrown, he was one of the two governors out of the total of twelve who were investigated and found blameless.02/17/2006
Asaba - FORMER chairman, Ukwuani local government area of Delta State and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Capt, R.I. Ogburu has been shot dead by suspected assassins. Similarly three persons were feared dead yesterday in Onitsha, Anambra State during a bloody clash between suspected members of the Movement for the Actualisation of a Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and Onitsha Main Market Vigilante Group.02/14/2006
opinion Lagos - We have seen the attempt by the Nigerian Information Minister, Mr. Frank Nweke, to divert the attention of Nigerians from the main problems facing the polity and the people. That childish effort of slinging mud at the good name of Prof. Wole Soyinka is indeed immature and will achieve nothing.02/08/2006
interview Governor Chimaroke Nnamani, Enugu State governor, in this interview says he believes if the Constitution is amended to provide for another term of office for President Olusegun Obasanjo, he remains the best candidate because of his achievement and experience.02/02/2006
Enugu - Youth leaders from South East and South South rose from a joint two day meeting in Enugu, yesterday, vowing to resist any attempt to deny the two zones the Presidency in 2007 declaring that they will "take our destiny in our hands" if that should happen.
